The St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy 2020

The 5th WTA St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy international tennis tournament has come to an end in St. Petersburg with Gazprom Export as its title sponsor. From 8 to 16 February, leading female tennis players from 25 countries battled on the courts of Sibur Arena for championship titles in the singles and doubles draws.

This year provided spectators with thrilling and memorable contests between international tennis' top female players, including the winners of previous years' tournaments in St. Petersburg. They included the two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitová of Poland (winner of the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy 2018), Kristina Mladenovic of France (winner of St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy 2017), and the defending champion Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands, as well some of the top 20 in the WTA Rankings: Belinda Bencic of Switzerland (No. 5), Johanna Konta of Great Britain (No. 14), and Markéta Vondroušová of the Czech Republic (No. 17). Russia was represented at the tournament by Ekaterina Alexandrova, Veronika Kudermetova, and Svetlana Kuznetsova.

The doubles title was won by a pair from Japan — Shuko Aoyama and Ena Shibahara, who defeated Kaitlyn Christian (USA) and Alexa Guarachi (Chili) in the final by a score of 4:6, 6:0, 10:3.

The highlight of the tournament was the final of the singles draw, won by Kiki Bertens. In defending her title, the Dutch player gave not a single chance to Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan in a match that lasted for only 1 hour 13 minutes and finished with a scoreline of 6:1, 6:3.

The St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy was held in St. Peterburg for the fifth time, and has gained well-deserved popularity in the global tennis community over the years: Year after year, the tournament gets greater and greater support from both fans and players, which is emphasized by the fact that the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) recognized the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy as the best WTA tournament in the Premier category in both 2018 and 2019.
